Transitional Living Program

The Transitional Living Program (TLP) at Promise House equips homeless youth ages 16 through 21 years old with the skills and education necessary to become independent, productive adults. The program’s goal is to help formerly homeless youth develop much-needed independent living skills in a nurturing environment that offers stability, consistency and safety. Created for older teens who truly have no other resources, the program provides no-cost:

  • Shelter (up to two years) and basic necessities like food and clothing
  • Medical and dental care
  • Psychological assessments and mental health services
  • Counseling
  • Education assistance
  • Job aptitude evaluation and career planning services
  • Life skills training
  • Recreational opportunities
  • Assistance locating and leasing apartments
  • Case management

Youth can move through the program at their own pace and retain access to counseling and case management services even after exiting Promise House.

In 2017, Promise House expanded our Transitional Living Program by opening two new four-bed group homes. The new group homes offer all of the services listed above, plus specialized resources for LGBT youth and those who have aged out of foster care. These two groups are especially vulnerable and represent a large portion of homeless youth aged 16-21.

LGBT Group Home: Because LGBT teens face a particularly high risk of becoming homeless and often arrive with a unique set of additional needs, Promise House has created a group home to serve these youth. Clients in this group home receive specialized counseling and case management.

Former Foster Care Group Home: More than 1,100 youth in Texas age out of the foster care system every year, and studies indicate that up 50 percent of these youth are homeless, on the verge of becoming homeless or living in unstable conditions. Promise House has created a group home to provide a safety net for this vulnerable population.
